Magpies by 5Happy5 Magpies by 5Happy5
This is a beautiful little old poem about Magpies. I love old sayings and superstitions, here (in the Uk) it's bad luck to see only one Magpie. This is because of what the Magpies symbolize in this poem. It's about the path to enlightenment.
One for Sorrow- the path we walk alone, the hermit.
Two for Joy- the path of the lovers
Three for a Girl- the feminine aspect of energy
Four for a Boy- the male aspect of energy
Five for Silver- Based on the pracitice of Alcemy, where you turn things into silver. This could be an energetic practice, rather than physical
Six for Gold- same as above but with gold.
Seven for a Secret Never to be Told- the ultimate teachings of enlightenment are such that you are unable to explain what you've learnt to anyone, as our simple words are too small to explain it.

This has been done with black pen and coloured pencils.

Thanks to :iconphalalcrocorax: for his wonderful Rainbow Magpie photo's.

Beautifully done, and also interesting interpretation! Completely different from how I have always understood it. I first heard this poem from my grandmother when I was a kid. She would count the crows she saw, and interpret them as omens based on the verses of this poem. Also, I always thought the last verse was "story" rather than "secret". Here is how I understood the meaning:

One for sorrow: You will be alone
Two for joy: You will find love
Three for a girl: You will have a baby girl
Four for a boy: You will have a baby boy
Five for silver: You will have a modest fortune
Six for gold: You will have a great fortune
Seven for the story that's never been told: The story of your life can never be fully told, because you are living it.

I'm not sure where it came from but it goes like this:
1 for sadness
2 for mirth
3 for marriage
4 for birth
5 for laughter
6 for crying
7 for sickness
8 for dieing
9 for silver
10 for gold
11 for a secret that will never be told.

Magpies "bring bad luck" in UK? Wow, I thought my black cat was enough, and now I know this about magpies, incredible!
In Italy the only thing why magpies are famous is for their stealing attitude, or at least it is said so. I have a bunch of birds around my house and nobody has never stolen anything.
Anyway, good picture!

Magpies do love shiney things. They take them as gifts to their partner, 'cos thay mate for life. It's kinda like giving a bunch of flowers for Magpies. And now you know something else about Magpies :D

You should read Terry Pratchett: Carpe jugulum.
The witches argue over the magpie rhyme through most of the book.

I think I had just read that one before doing this drawing. I read lots of Terry Pratchett's books, still funny no mater how many times I read them :D
